Large Cents 1796 S-84 R3 Liberty Cap VF Detail, Cleaned, PCGS

Large Cents
1796 S-84 R3 Liberty Cap VF Detail, Cleaned, PCGS. An attractive cent but covered with fine porosity and there are traces of verdigris in protected areas on the reverse. Tan and light steel brown. The date is bold and the legends are strong. Only minor contact marks. EDS, Breen state I, before the bulge at the 6 becomes obvious. Graded VG10 in the Noyes census, his photo #59138. This cataloger's EAC grade is net VG10. A modest cent that comes with a surprisingly immodest provenance. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. 35759.92/47250181.

A U.S. Navy admiral, Worthington Smith Bitler formed an important collection of early date large cents. Abe Kosoff purchased his collection in 1960 and slowly sold the coins through auction and private transactions. Kosoff consigned the rest of the coins along with those from other sources to an A-Mark auction held on March 17, 1973. Known as "Worthy," Bitler was born in Norfolk, Virginia on April 29, 1900 and died in Burlington, New Jersey on April 4, 1987. He married Mildred and they had a daughter, Nina Bitler, who was born about 1915. Bitler remarried Doris Blaisdell. He served as Commander of the USS Salt Lake City during World War II, earning the Silver Star.
